The Mahidol Migration Center–Joint Research Unit, together with Chiang Mai University’s Faculty of Humanities and the Migrant Working Group, hosted the Collaborative Dialogue on Agricultural Migrant Worker Policy Reform on 30 October 2023 in Bangkok.
The event, opened by Thailand’s Ministries of Labour and Public Health, brought together government officials, researchers, civil society, and international partners such as the ILO to address critical policy gaps affecting migrant agricultural workers. Discussions highlighted Thailand’s deep reliance on migrant labor in agriculture, ongoing challenges with documentation, unsafe housing, and insufficient labor rights protections for seasonal and multi-employer workers.
The dialogue emphasized the urgent need for a new, tailored social protection system that reflects the unique realities of the agricultural sector, which is widely recognized as the backbone of Thailand’s economy.
